This set of 6 Hepplewhite style shield back dining chairs was handmade by highly skilled craftsmen working for the renowned Baltimore furniture company, Potthast Brothers (1892–1975), once locted at 924 N. Charles Street in Baltimore. The mahogany chairs feature beautiful inlaid marquetry work along the legs and around the shield backs, which have bellflower motifs on the splats. All of the chairs have removable upholstered cushions and measure 21” D x 21” W x 37” H. (The back of the armed chair is slightly higher at about 38” tall.) 5 of the 6 chairs feature their original flathead screws. All chairs are currently upholstered in a “Wallis blue” velvet/microsuede. Today, Potthast furniture is highly collectible. These chairs likely date to the early 1940s.
